POH10 From Illicit Hands to Your Office: Mastering the Management and Legal Response to Complications from Unlawful Dermatologic Procedures
DESCRIPTION
With the growing popularity of aesthetic procedures, dermatologists worldwide are increasingly faced with managing complications arising from interventions performed by unlicensed or inadequately trained people. This session offers a comprehensive and practical overview of the most common dermatologic conditions linked to such unlawful practices—ranging from laser burns, chemical injuries, HPI and vitiligo-like scarring to infections such as herpes, bacterial cellulitis, and mycobacterioses. Participants will gain clinical pearls on the diagnosis and management of those complications. The session will also address how to approach these patients safely and ethically from a medicolegal perspective—covering jurisdictional considerations, documentation strategies, and how to avoid being legally entangled in third-party malpractice. Dermatologists from Latin America, Asia and the United States will share experiences, regulations, and policy responses in their respective countries, providing a comparative global lens. This is an essential session for any dermatologist practicing procedural or aesthetic dermatology, preparing you to manage complications with both clinical confidence and legal foresight.
