DESCRIPTION

The 2026 Jt. Commission (JCAHO) Ambulatory National Patient Safety Goals include correct patient identification, prevention of surgical mistakes and infections, and the safe use of medications. Other national patient safety groups emphasize concerns with newer health information technology, including AI scribe function, clinical decision support, patient support chatbots and the proliferation of journal paper mills. Associated AI risks include charting errors, hallucinations, speech accent bias, clinical deskilling, patient privacy, informed consent, and ethical, regulatory, and medical-legal issues. It’s also critical for physicians to know AI patient privacy issues and key questions to ask the many AI vendors.
