POH09 Menopause and Dermatology: Recognizing and Treating Hormone-Driven Changes
DESCRIPTION
Dermatologists encounter a spectrum of skin-related manifestations tied to the menopause transition, ranging from hair loss and resurgent acne to vaginal dryness and hyperhidrosis. These cutaneous symptoms are external indicators of the profound hormonal shifts occurring during this phase of a woman’s life. Yet, despite the frequency and significance of these presentations, there remains a conspicuous gap when it comes to education and training in the subject of menopause among dermatologists. The session emphasizes evidence-based care, contextualizes current hormone therapy risk-benefit data, and equips attendees to integrate menopausal status into dermatology practice.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Review hormonal changes in menopause and their relevance to dermatologists as both clinicians and patients.
Describe how menopause influences common dermatologic conditions—such as alopecia, rosacea, psoriasis, and hidradenitis suppurativa—and how menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) may affect their clinical course.
Identify symptoms and treatment approaches for genitourinary syndrome of menopause and related conditions.
