DESCRIPTION

We make a myriad of diagnostic and therapeutic decisions every day. While those decisions are primarily based on our medical knowledge and guidelines, they are also influenced by a wide range of factors. Some of these factors can interfere with the implementation of even perfect medical knowledge, leading to suboptimal performance and medical errors. Attendees of this practical, clinical example-driven session will learn to recognize common decision-making pitfalls, such as pressure-induced compliance erosion, cognitive pattern errors, repetition fatigue. Specific corrective tools and strategic ways to incorporate them in the decision-making process using established, conscious habit-making procedures will be discussed.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1.

Recognize cognitive pattern based and pressure-induced vulnerabilities of the decision-making process.

2.

Apply simple techniques to reduce erroneous decision-making and improve quality and consistency in the delivery of medical care.

3.

Utilize habit-forming procedures to integrate tools of improvement of individual performance quality into the medical thought process.
