P024 Mind Body Therapies as a Treatment Strategy in Dermatology: What is the Evidence?
DESCRIPTION
This session provides an evidence-based approach for how mind-body strategies might be used to help reduce disease severity, exacerbation frequency, adverse effects of treatment. Stress has multiple and wide-ranging physiologic and clinical impacts on skin disease through the effect of locally secreted hormones and mediators that affect skin integrity, inflammation, and healing potential. Studies have shown that introducing mind-body practices can have positive effects on dermatologic diseases influenced by psychological stress exposure. Discussion will center around how engaging in these practices can help support physician wellbeing and minimize burnout.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Evaluate the role of stress and trauma on skin barrier function, inflammation, wound healing and immunosuppression
Manage inflammatory conditions like atopic dermatitis and hidradentitis suppurativa as well as skin cancer with an integrative approach to reduce disease severity, exacerbation frequency and adverse effects of treatment
Use mind body practices to minimize physician burnout and improve patient outcomes
