DESCRIPTION

The first version of this talk started in 2016 when vaccination rates in the US started to fall below ideal levels to keep the disease under control. Many of us have never seen measles and risk not recognizing it when it presents. As vaccination rates have continued to fall and we have dropped below the rates needed to maintain herd immunity, measles has shown up again in many communities. This talk will review the clinical manifestations of measles, review epidemiology, and review diagnosis, treatment and prevention strategies for this highly infectious virus.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1.

Recognize the key clinical characteristics of measles and make sure it is on your radar!

2.

Examine the epidemiology of measles in the US today and discuss impact of falling vaccination rates on disease outbreaks

3.

Formulate a diagnostic and therapeutic response for suspected cases of measles
