U073 Unraveling the Changing Epidemiology of Leprosy in the U.S.: Essential Clinical Insights for Dermatologists
DESCRIPTION
This session explores the rising incidence of leprosy in the United States and its implications for dermatologists. Traditionally, a rare disease in the U.S., leprosy is becoming more prevalent, particularly in regions with high immigrant populations from endemic areas. The talk will cover key topics such as the clinical presentations of leprosy, diagnostic challenges, and the role of dermatologists in early detection. Attendees will gain essential knowledge about recognizing leprosy's diverse manifestations, treatment options, and the importance of understanding this disease in the context of shifting epidemiology.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Describe recent trends in leprosy incidence, including geographic and demographic shifts, and understand the role of immigration patterns and endemic areas in disease prevalence.
Differentiate between tuberculoid, lepromatous, and borderline forms of leprosy. Recognize early and atypical dermatologic manifestations to facilitate early diagnosis.
Discuss the limitations of traditional histopathologic and microbiologic diagnostic methods. Review newer diagnostic techniques, including molecular testing and nerve conduction studies. Highlight the importance of dermatologists in diagnosing and referring patients for multidisciplinary care.
