F054 Psychocutaneous Disease: Treating the Difficult Patient
DESCRIPTION
Common psychocutaneous diseases include delusional infestation (delusions of parasitosis), skin picking disorder and other body-focused and repetitive behaviors, factitious dermatitis (dermatitis artefacta), and body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). Affected individuals often refuse psychiatric referrals, placing the burden of care primarily on dermatologists. This session will focus on effective management strategies for these conditions in adult patients within dermatology, including the use of appropriate medications and implementation of stress-reduction techniques. Speakers will also discuss skin and hair conditions associated with secondary mental illness, the screening process for BDD, and strategies for managing patients with personality disorders in the dermatology setting.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Describe common psychocutaneous conditions and confidently identify the associated psychiatric/psychosocial comorbidities.
Discuss skin and hair diseases associated with secondary mental illness, the approach to a patient with a personality disorder in dermatology, and screening for body dysmorphic disorder.
Develop management plans for the challenging patient with a psychocutaneous disease by utilizing effective drugs and implementing stress reduction interventions.
