DESCRIPTION

Safety events occur in all practices, whether academic or private practice. Avoidance (proactive quality interventions) can reduce patient harms as well as protect physicians, as can knowing how to assess and respond to safety events when they do occur. This session will demonstrate, through case based events that the presenter has been involved in solving, how QI science, including PDSA cycles and other approaches to minimizing harm, can be implemented. Attendees should come away with practical tools to take back to academic departments or private practice settings.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1.

Identify problems for QI and PS projects proactively (before problems occur)

2.

Design a PDSA cycle
