U023 Histology and Substructural Imaging Microscopy Correlation with Lasers and Energy-Based Device
DESCRIPTION
Lasers and energy-based devices play an important role in dermatology, yet gaps remain in understanding their mechanisms and clinical use. In multiple surveys, < 50% of dermatology residents in the United States feel adequately trained in their use. To ensure effective and safe laser treatments, a thorough understanding of laser-tissue interactions is essential. While histologic and non-invasive skin imaging are valuable tools for demonstrating these interactions, discussions often overlook the detailed insights they provide into the changes induced by lasers.
This session provides an in-depth review of the histologic and non-invasive skin imaging effects of lasers in the treatment of pigmentary, scarring, and vascular lesions. We will assess the impact of lasers through extensive histologic analyses (using light and electron microscopy) and imaging techniques, and correlate the findings with appropriate clinical endpoints. By examining the mechanisms, efficacy, and potential complications at both microscopic and non-invasive imaging levels, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the appropriate applications and associated risks of these technologies.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Analyze the mechanisms of established and emerging lasers and EBD using histological evidence and non-invasive skin imaging tools such as optical coherence tomography.
Identify appropriate clinical endpoints of laser treatment and correlate them with histologic and imaging evidence.
