F013 To Err is Human: Mistakes in Health Care: How to Avoid Them and Manage Them When They Occur
DESCRIPTION
Medical mistakes are a reality in the practice of medicine, however, unfortunately, there is minimal to no instruction in both undergraduate and graduate medical educational in terms of how to deal with medical mistakes. This session will focus on all aspects of medical mistakes, to include, what are predisposing factors to medical mistakes, how to disclose medical mistakes, how to deal with them from a patient care perspective once they have occurred, how to navigate the medicolegal and malpractice implications of a medical mistake and finally, how to psychologically cope and continue to clinically practice after a medical mistake has occurred.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Examine what circumstances, environments and medical reasoning lead to medical mistakes.
Manage the disclosure of medical mistakes and also how to navigate patient care after a medical mistake has occurred.
Discuss the concept of 'second victim' and identify strategies for providers to effectively cope with a medical mistake.
