DESCRIPTION
It is impossible to practice dermatology without using light, whether that involves phototherapy, lasers, PDT, or photonic-based diagnostic devices. Light can also cause harmful effects including
skin cancer, photoaging, and photodermatoses. In this session, the unique physical properties of each major waveband of light—ultraviolet, visible, and infrared—will be discussed to demonstrate
how and why light can harm or help the skin. Specific clinical applications will be reviewed with an emphasis on the latest research updates and clinical practice recommendations for 2024.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Discuss and distinguish the key dermatologic effects of the three principal forms of light energy: ultraviolet, visible, and infrared.
Identify the latest advances and recommendations for using different forms of light energy to treat skin disorders, especially as related to different skin colors and phototypes.
