U085 Novel Uses for Laser & Light-based Devices in Pediatric Patients
DESCRIPTION
There is a need for greater collaboration between laser surgeons and pediatric dermatologists to identify best practices based on understanding of laser-tissue interactions as well as age-specific concerns surrounding optimal laser dosimetry, timing of treatment and how to best approach serial procedures with pain in the pediatric population. The goals of this session are to explore critical gaps and controversies in the management of pediatric patients with port wine birthmarks. These will include advances in genomics, the utility of non-invasive imaging to augment treatment parameters, the optimal timing of intervention, and risks/benefits of approaches to anesthesia utilizing existing evidence. This session will bring together 2 laser surgeons and 2 pediatric dermatologists to continue a collaborative dialogue regarding how to optimize evidence-based practices for these patients.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Review the genetics of port wine birthmarks
Elucidate challenges and opportunities for in vivo imaging of port wine birthmarks to optimize treatment
Discuss the natural history of treatment in port wine birthmarks - does earlier intervention matter? Evaluate the role of anesthesia in treatment of children with port wine birthmarks, along with evidence based evaluation of risks/benefits.
